Company Story: From Hobby to Success
At Metcalf Sawmill Products, LLC, our company story is rooted in a deep connection to the timber industry and a passion for providing high-quality wood products. Founded by Mark Metcalf, a man with a lifelong experience in the timber industry, our journey began as a humble hobby that has blossomed into a successful business.
Growing up in Southern Oregon, Mark was surrounded by the sights and sounds of the timber industry. As a young adult, he immersed himself in the field, taking on jobs logging and falling timber. However, it wasn't until 1976 when he made the intriguing transition to work as a police officer in Gold Beach. After dedicating himself to a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, Mark found himself drawn back to his roots in the timber industry.
In pursuit of his passion, Mark purchased his first sawmill upon retirement. Initially, it was just a personal hobby, and he would saw any log that came his way. It was during this time that he discovered the untapped potential of Port Orford Cedar logs, a niche species abundantly found in Southwest Oregon. Recognizing a growing demand for this remarkable wood, Mark seized the opportunity and purchased his first log truck load of Port Orford Cedar in 2008, officially establishing Metcalf Sawmill Products.
A New Chapter Unveils: The Beginning of the Legacy
As demand for our products continued to rise, Mark realized that he needed to expand the business. In 2013, he made the decision to bring on his son, Matt Metcalf. Matt, who had been working as a successful general contractor in the building trade, was the natural choice to join forces with Mark. With Matt's expertise and experience, Metcalf Sawmill Products underwent significant growth, catering to a wider clientele and meeting the increasing lumber orders.
When the time came for Mark to retire, for the second time, in 2021, he entrusted the ownership of the business to his son, Matt. With a firm understanding of the company's values and vision, Matt took the reins and continues to lead Metcalf Sawmill Products to new heights.
The Future
Looking towards the future, we have Scott Metcalf, Matt's son, who has been immersed in the sawmill since his early days. Having grown up around the business and showing a keen interest in the timber industry, Scott joined the company full-time after graduating from Gold Beach High School. Now serving as our lead sawyer, Scott brings fresh perspectives and a passion for the growth and success of our business.
With a strong foundation built on family values, deep industry knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to quality, Metcalf Sawmill Products, LLC is poised to pioneer new frontiers in the timber industry.
